Plattform Schmuckkunst presents its largest group exhibition to date.

21 works by national and international jewelery artists have been selected for the One Gram title.

On the one hand, these inspire through their special optics and haptics - various and unusual materials, combinations and shapes.

On the other hand, surprisingly different, as well as multilayered
content and topics are addressed and are linked through, as well as to the exhibition title.

The opening will take place on September 18, 2021 in the shared premises of the association Plattform Schmuckkunst und Atelier Schmuckes (at Mariahilferplatz 3, 8020 Graz) at 7 p.m., as well as
online on 19.9. at 6 p.m. @plattform.schmuckkunst.

"The Relevant Atomic Mass of a Tortilla Chip"

For this piece, I took inspiration from the theme of this competition and searched through various common objects within my home, searching for one that would weigh just one gram. The result: a tortilla chip -- a delicious snack that I decided to reinterpret (and exalt) as a delicious object of adornment.

One gram of gold and one gram of plastic objects I found on a beach by the Atlantic Ocean. Two materials of the same weight, but different in characteristics. Two opposite values, but with one point in common - their ‘eternal’ dimension.

My quest is to merge contemporary displayed art and wearable art, to let the audience make the artwork theirs and to take it away from its classical setting. To achieve this, my jewelry becomes a means to bring art into everyday life.

In childhood, I learned never to tell the truth in an abrupt way. We used other means to inform and convince, like metaphorical stories, mythology, folktales. Today, hypocrisy has its way. Everything seems wonderful with ads, the media, and companies, all surface and no depth. The contrast between these two worlds are the inspiration for my work. Metaphor, the contrast between rupture and recombination, ambiguity and contradiction, the cyclicality of perfection and imperfection.

The Reishi is a mushroom from Asia, which is used for over 2,000 years for its medicinal and vital benefits.

In traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it plays an important role, because it has a incredibly wide
Spectrum to health-promoting benefits, and thus, many applications where it can strengthen the immune system.
In China the Reishi is called the “mushroom of eternal life” and is admired with other mushrooms and plants to be “the
Herbs of God.”
Regarding this theme the Reishi fungi in dried form is used as a talisman.

Die Maßeinheit '1 Gramm' wird in ihrem Gewicht oft mit der Kappe eines Kugelschreibers verglichen. Sucht man im Webbrowser nach dem Begriff '1 Gramm' erscheint einem als erstes das Bild eines Goldbarrens.

Gold ist für uns ein hohes Gut welches in Krisenzeiten sehr beliebt ist und für uns Wohlstand, Luxus und Sicherheit symbolisiert.

Die Plastikkappe des Kugelschreibers schützt ihn vor der Austrocknung und ist ein funktionales Element des Alltagsgegenstandes ohne den der Kugelschreiber wertlos werden würde und seine Funktion als Ausdrucks- und Kommunikationsmittel verlieren würde.
Es erfolgt eine Gegenüberstellung zweier Materialien mit gleichem Gewicht aber unterschiedlichen monetären, funktionalen und emotionalen Werten. 

Plastik und Gold  werden durch schmelzen in Form gebracht und können so wiedergewonnen werden. Bei Plastik wird weniger über dessen Wert als Ressource nachgedacht, jedoch sind beide Materialien in ihrer Herstellung und Funktion für uns wertvoll.

Objects which were born from our love for the sea and from our happy, pleasant walking along the shore.

With love and a bit feared we collected fragments, broken pieces and flakes of past lives that the water and the sand’s floating had slowly modelled.

We have put them together again, mixed them to other materials and got them ready for a new exciting life.

In my work I am working with aluminium foil creating big brooches with illustrations.

The theme of this exhibition made me check what is actually “1 Gram” of something, because “1 gram””-really?!? What can one do with such a miniscule weight?? and I was surprised to find out that it is not that small..... so I made this huge brooch with a round peridot stone set between all those greenish square robots……and yes: this is a one gram Peridot, thank you very much!

Der Kommentar zu einem enganliegenden Kleid inspirierte mich: „Bei der Klamotte darf man echt kein Gramm zunehmen.“

Was tun, wenn das Lieblingsstück zu eng geworden ist und sich der Knopf nicht mehr schließen lässt?

„Ein Gramm zu viel“ kann Knopf und Knopfloch einander näher bringen, indem es dazwischen gespannt deren Verbindung darstellt.

Der funkelnde Stein überstrahlt dabei unbeabsichtigte optische Details.

Ein Gramm mehr oder weniger. Seit Bündchen elastisch sind halten Socken an der schlanken und an der strammen Wade.

Sie brauchen keine Halter mehr. Für diejenigen, die Sockenhalter trotzdemlieben, habe ich das Schmuckstück entworfen.

Ein Gramm zu wenig. Wenn die Hose rutscht, können Hosenträger helfen.

Oder man trägt sie eben baggy.

Deshalb habe ich Schmuck statt Hosenträgern entworfen.

Ein Ring wie ein Zuckerlpapier, so leicht, zart & picksüß.
Oder: Ein Spiel mit Körper & Gewicht, Süsse & Verzierung.
Ein rosa Mascherl, bei dem man das Seidenpapier schon rascheln hört, wird zum Ring.
1 Gramm Schmuck voller leichter rosa Süsse, völlig Zucker-, Kontext- und Inhaltsfrei.
• Wie kommunizieren wir als Gesellschaft über Süsses? In Kontext von Verniedlichung, Kalorien,
Geschmack, Sexualisierung, Gewicht, Versuchung, Gesundheit, Werbesprache?
• Was assoziieren wir mit candy/Zuckerl? Vielleicht Rosa, Genuss, Belohnung, Geschenk, Muttermilch…
• Wie wichtig ist der Inhalt und was macht die Verpackung? Vielleicht steht das Mascherl für Verzierung
wie bei einem Geschenk. Oder auch als Fixierung eines Knoten, um den Inhalt - in unserem Fall den Finger - zu schützen.

During the pandemic, many families were affected indifferent aspects and levels of their daily lives.
Social inequality was much more visible affecting themost vulnerable in their basic needs.
Fortunately, a sector of the population offered theirhelp to those most in need.
People was helped in solidarity to survive in thesedifficult times.
This situation showed us how vulnerable humanbeings can be.
For this work I chose to work with cardboard, thesame material as the boxes where the help wasdelivered to the most vulnerable people.
The use and transformation of this material into mypieces is a reminder of hope in the human being.

One Gram | 1 gr

How big can one gram of balsa wood be? Although it is a very light material it also becomes
fragile when it becomes too thin. Carved and sanded from a block down to one gram each,
these pieces are then coated with many layers of paint, pigments and varnish. They wander
the very fine line between being light and just about strong enough, pretending to be heavy,
when they’re not.

Made of 0.5 sterling silver plate. Melted on the surface. Filed and bent into shape.
Both earrings weight one Gram. Just by bending a curve inwards or outwards, the earring appears lighter or heavier.
One Gram does not mean one Gram. Just by playing with shapes, our eyes can be tricked. Creating something, that is not there. Or letting something disturbing disappear.
This fact opens up countless possibilities for us jewellery makers. So let us keep playing…

Wann ist es genug? Wann verbrauchen wir das letzte Gramm der unersetzbarer Natur?

Diese Arbeit spricht von Ungleichgewicht in Ökosystemen, der Erschöpfung der Meere und deren gravierenden, dauerhaften Veränderungen.

Nach der Ausbeutung der seichten Gewässer werden wir in größeren Tiefen jagen.

Die Zerstörung haben wir selber vorprogrammiert.

Nicht nur die bisher unbekannten Gebiete der Erde, sondern auch die Lebensdauer wird gefährdet.

Bevor wir die Geheimnisse der Tiefseearten kennenlernen und erforschen können, verschwinden sie vor unseren Augen.

Die Stücke aus der Serie „IMAGO Fusion“ beschreiben das Ereignis der Verschmelzung, die in allen Bereichen unseres Lebens eine meist
positiv besetzte Rolle spielt.

Indem der Kokon eines Falters – ein Lebewesen, das wir der Luft zuordnen – und der Faden einer Spinne – ein Insekt, das krabbelt und
klettert – in einem Schmuckstück einander durchdringen, entsteht eine Art Hybrid, der die Symbolsprachen beider Gattungen in sich vereint:
fliegen, krabbeln, spinnen und weben.

Die Beschaffenheit des Kokons mit seiner unerreichten Formstabilität und einem Faden, der ähnlich hochbelastbar wie der einer Spinne ist, werden zusammengeführt zu einem kleinen, praktisch gewichtslosen Halsschmuckstück.
Die federleichten Stücke überschreiten die 1 Gramm–Grenze nicht, bzw. nur geringfügig.

Das ist zwar ein Kollateral–Effekt, in diesem Fall jedoch ein sehr gewünschter, da sich das Gewicht tatsächlich an den Ausstellungstitel anlehnt.

„Wer das Denken zur Hauptsache macht, der kann es darin zwar weit bringen, aber er hat doch eben den Boden mit dem Wasser vertauscht, und einmal wird er ersaufen.“ Konstatierte Hermann Hesse über die Endlichkeit und (Un-)Fähigkeit des menschlichen Geistes. Die Dinge sind zu groß und zu weit, um sie mit unserem Erbsenverstand zu erfassen und selbiger Verstand leidet unter jenem Versuch. Statt sich der natürlichen Ordnung des Kosmos, des Universums und der Ewigkeit zu beugen, übt sich unsere Spezies im Erbsenzählen, im Kategorisieren, im Berechnen und messbar machen, in Statistiken und Tabellen entwerfen. Die Welt, die uns umgibt, zu quantifizieren, zeichnet das Erbsengehirn aus. Dieser Pin ist eine Ode an die Genüsslichkeit der Ignoranz und die Demut vor dem Unwissen.

Thinking about the topic of One gram, I concluded that one gram of something should be expensive, valuable or rare.

Well, not necessarily expensive materially.

I looked at this topic very personally and wondered what might be very valuable to me, even if it was just one gram.

I answered this question for myself by creating a ring in which I gave a meaning to one gram of holy land.

I often like to travel around pilgrimage sites and I pick up some sand or pebbles from there to bring a particle of that place back with me. The ring became a kind of reliquary preserving a crumb of holy land.

It’s a way to carry a precious place in a ring and expect to get back there again. Or maybe inspire someone else to become a pilgrim.

„ENTSCHULDIGEN SIE BITTE, DARF ICH……..?“

Ein Faden der nur zufällig auf der Kleidung haftet, oder im Haar, stört unsere Sehgewohnheiten, er irritiert, allerdings den Betrachter mehr und weniger den ahnungslosen Träger. Dieses rein zufällig Entstandene, das nicht Geplante oder Gewollte, ein Ergebnis der Banalität ist ja leicht zu beseitigen, im Gegensatz zum Fleck der beim Verursacher Scham hervorruft, und lässt Kommunikation entstehen. „ Entschuldigen Sie, darf ich…..?“ könnte gerade im Moment ein Augenblick der zurückgewonnenen Begegnung sein, die wir so nötig brauchen.

Ein Schmuckstück, das nicht nach Schmuck ausschaut, eher nach Zufall. Und wenig ist so schwer und gleichzeitig lustvoll zu gestalten als die Leichtigkeit des Zufalls.

Gold mining is one of the most destructive industries in the world. It can displace communities, contaminate drinking water, hurt workers, and destroy pristine environments. Mining companies generate about 20 tons of toxic waste for every One Gram of gold.

On the other hand, E-waste is the fastest growing and most problematic waste stream in the world.

The Global E-waste Monitor found that a record 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste was generated in 2020.

Knowing how much waste is generated for one gram of gold and the damage to the planet those two industries can cause, I haven’t given up on jewelry making, but I have replaced the gold and the stones with e-waste. The earrings Achtung Baustelle! were created with upcycled e-waste extracted from discarded computers and mobile phones – aluminum heat sink, cable and IC chips.

This 'Hidden Life' brooch is comprised of a suspended delicate pillow form of mesh, perforated to allow light to play within it, casting numerous ever-changing shadows onto its surroundings.

It is inspired by the unnoticed or misunderstood life that around us.

Soil is a mundane material; brown and boring, it seems to be dull and lifeless.

Yet one single gram of soil can hold scores of bacteria, fungal filaments, protozoa and nematodes.

Many of these numerous miniature, delicate, and essential components of our ecosystems are unknown to us.

The brooch is made in response to a wonderment for nature, and its capacity to surprise and intrigue.

Each hole in the piece acts as a viewfinder into it, offering glimpses of interest that we cannot quite grasp.

Hairy Enchantment reimagines hair as an enchanting material.
It reflects one gram through a simultaneous play of hair’s fragility and durability.

Hair strands seem to be on the constant verge of breakage, a delicate state brought about by the contrasting visuality between them and the substantial mass of the glass formation.

Yet a change of perspective on the same juxtaposition reveals an apparent reality where the glass object is connected to security through almost invisible hairy strings, mirroring a little-known fact that human hair strength has a ratio that is comparable to steel strength.

Thus one gram became a metaphorical weight that whispers the poetic beauty of hair as being light and heavy at the same time, where a steel-like resilience coincides with an airy vulnerability.

The spiral is a figure that involves and captures at different levels.

From the graphic perceptive point of view it is already present in the most ancient representations, but also physically it can become a whirlwind that drags. Pure has become a symbol of inspiration for artistic, magical-symbolic and literary productions.

In the Volute ring, the iconic role of the spiral is enhanced by physically and totally involving the back of the hand that will wear it.

The finger in which it will insert will turn into an irradiation center harmonizing the entire morphology of the ring.

The jewel exacerbates the qualities related to appearance and changes the role of an artefact that "makes one suffer" into an "uncomfortable" and "annoying" object but... very, very light, almost less than one gram!
